TAK review

»TAK – [T]om is lossless [a]udio [k]ompressor / [T]about loudly free [A]udio[k]ompressor – is, as the name suggests, a lossless audio compressor, similar to FLAC, WavPack and Monkey’s Audio. On average, lossless compression reduces the file size to approximately 50 percent of its original size; however, the compression can vary between about 30 and 70 percent, depending on the file. Decompression restores a slightly identical copy of the original audio data (hence the loss)….

My goal was to develop a compressor that combines good compression with optimal decoding speed. The current implementation should, on average, match the compression efficiency of Monkey’s Audio High and achieve a decompression speed similar to FLAC. «(Quote from Thomas Becker from the TAKU readme)

The compression is slightly better and the error tolerance is at the same level compared to FLAC.

Audio players with TAK support are: – Foobar2000 – Winamp – Quintessential player – XMplay

Other applications with TAK support are: – Exact Audio Copy (EAC) – MP3tag– shnTool
