WKU's Personal Finance Summer Camp receives support from the new partnership

The Center for Financial Success (CFS) at Western Kentucky University is growing its residential high school summer camp as a result of a relationship with Abound Credit Union. With the help of the new collaboration with Abound Credit Union, CFS is able to enhance scholarships for campers while also receiving substantial funding for the camp.

The Personal Finance Summer Camp will run from June 26th through June 30th. The camp launched in the summer of 2021 with 14 high school students. This summer, the camp is scheduled to host 30 rising 10th-grade through 12th-grade students from across Kentucky, and Tennessee. Campers will spend five-days living on campus, learning about personal finance, and competing in a financial plan case study competition. The case study requires the teams to build a financial plan for a mock client with a presentation on the last day of the camp. As part of the experience, the campers visit local financial firms and their advisors serve as a resource for the case study competition. The camp counselors are financial planning students who provide guidance and support throughout the camp.

Ray Springsteen, president and chief executive officer of Abound Credit Union, expressed his excitement about supporting WKU’s Personal Finance Summer Camp. “At Abound, our main goal is to make Kentuckians’ lives better. The credit union makes investments in financial literacy initiatives for everyone in the state, from young children to seniors. The WKU Personal Finance Camp is a fantastic method to teach more Kentuckians the fundamentals of personal finance and improve their lives.

Kentucky Treasurer, Honorable Allison Ball is scheduled to deliver in-person remarks at the Closing Awards Ceremony on June 30th. The Treasurer has played a vital role in expanding access to financial literacy in Kentucky, including spearheading the creation of the Kentucky Financial Empowerment Commission and we appreciate her support for our camp.

WKU’s Center for Financial Success (CFS): The Center for Financial Success is housed in WKU’s Gordon Ford College of Business in Bowling Green, KY. The Center provides resources to aid the university and regional community in becoming financially informed and independent by utilizing a combination of faculty expertise, peer-to-peer coaching, and applied financial planning education.
