At CES 2022, Ghost of Tsushima was honored for selling over eight million copies to date, which is an incredible figure. A fellow first-party open world game, has long been thought to have underperformed in terms of sales, but director Jeff Ross claims that the Sons of Anarchy-inspired zombie shooter has sold over 8 million copies.
The PlayStation 4 version has sold 8 million copies, according to the director
Obviously, we weren’t privy to what Ross and his team were told, but presumably PlayStation bigwigs were more disappointed with its critical performance than its commercial one – especially considering the numbers being touted here. It’s probably safe to assume the game has surpassed 10 million units across PS4 and PC by now, which is wildly successful.
According to Ross, this number was accurate around the time he left Sony in December 2020, so a little over 18 months after the game’s launch. “It’s since gone on to sell more, and then a million plus on Steam,” he added. “Local studio management always made us feel like it was a big disappointment.”
Despite the huge numbers, Sony decided not to greenlight a successor, and the team at Bend Studio is now working on a new intellectual property for the PS5. It’s obviously a shame Days Gone didn’t get a bit more love internally because it was a very enjoyable game and clearly it found a massive audience, but we’ve never been particularly opposed to the studio trying something different.
