News Tech: Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi’s visit on Tuesday fanned Chinese hostility amid escalating hostilities between China and Taiwan. Prior to Pelosi’s arrival, suspected Chinese hackers launched a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack against Taiwan’s government websites. Huge amounts of internet traffic are sent towards the target server during a DDoS attack to disrupt the service.

Chang Tun-Han, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Presidential Palace, acknowledged this and said on Facebook that a DDoS attack from another country targeted the Presidential Palace’s official website, which saw 200 times as much traffic as usual.

“Before Pelosi arrived, electronic bulletin boards in the Taiwan Railways Administration’s Sinzuoying Station and in some 7-Eleven convenience stores were hacked as well, showing messages in simplified Chinese characters asking Pelosi to leave Taiwan,” reported.

According to reports, “The APT10 Group targeted a diverse array of commercial activity, industries and technologies, including aviation, satellite and maritime technology, industrial factory automation, automotive supplies, laboratory instruments, banking and finance, telecommunications and consumer electronics, computer processor technology, information technology services, packaging, consulting, medical equipment, healthcare, biotechnology, pharmaceutical manufacturing, mining, and oil and gas exploration and production. Among other things, Zhu and Zhang registered IT infrastructure that the APT10 Group used for its intrusions and engaged in illegal hacking operations.”

In November 2021, Taiwanese government representatives revealed that around five million cyber-attacks hit Taiwan’s government agencies every day, and most of the hacking attempts are originated from China.

The malware employed by APT10 and Blacktech in various operations has been correctly identified as “SodaMaster and TScookie” according to a study written by a Japanese cyber security researcher. Username, computer name, and current process ID have been found to be shared characteristics between SodaMaster and TSCokkie. This suggests that APT10 and the Blacktech hacking outfit may be run by the same entity.

Hacker also wrote, “There is one China, but Taiwan is the real China, while yours is only an imitation straight out of wish.com.” President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan believes the island is a separate country from China and has accused Beijing of stepping up its cyberattacks since the 2016 presidential election.

The website of the Heilongjiang Society Scientific Community Federation in China was vandalised by the @DepaixPorteur anonymous collective. The website was altered by a hacker who added the text “Taiwan Numbah Wan” along with pictures of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen and US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the US House, is welcomed in Taiwan. In retaliation for purported cyberattacks on Taiwanese government websites, the well-known hacking collective “Anonymous,” known for its efforts against aggressive states, vandalised Chinese official websites.
