News Tech: President Tsai Ing-wen said on Monday that Taiwan wants to make sure that its allies have stable access to semiconductors, or “democracy chips,” and that because of China’s threats, democratic allies must work together.

Five US lawmakers went to Taiwan a week after Pelosi’s visit, led by Senator Ed Markey.

Republican Governor Eric Holcomb is the third member of an American group to visit Taiwan this month after U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi made a quick trip there, angering China, which sees Taiwan as its own territory.

Soon after Pelosi’s visit, China conducted significant military drills close to Taiwan. Beijing’s claims of sovereignty are rejected by Taiwan, which maintains that only the island’s residents have the authority to make such decisions.

“We look so forward to working with them in designing the future,” he said.

According to Holcomb, Taiwan has some of the top high-tech talent in the world. “We’re facing and specifically seeking to turn supply chain pains into supply chain gains. I think the way we get there faster, in a more resilient fashion, is by doing it together,” he told reporters.

Purdue and Taiwanese electronics contract manufacturer Wistron Corp (3231.TW) signed a partnership agreement under Holcomb’s supervision, with Simon Lin, the company’s chairman, highlighting potential areas of cooperation such as cybersecurity and smart factories. As a global chip shortage affects consumer electronics and vehicle production, Taiwan has been eager to prove to the United States, its biggest overseas supporter, that it is a trustworthy ally.

Following the enactment this month of a U.S. bill to support the domestic semiconductor industry as it competes with Chinese and other international manufacturers, Tsai claimed Indiana stood to become a centre for chip technology. In the American state of Arizona, TSMC is constructing a $12 billion facility.
