News Tech: Newly created introductory STEM classes at Lakewood City Schools will be boosted by Ozobot Evo Classroom Kits deployed in seven Makerspaces. The school district pays for advanced robotics through the Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation (LREF), and most recently, he received a $26,910 grant from the Howmet Aerospace Foundation. “The Ozobot Evo classroom kit is another tool he can add to his STEM classroom to teach coding,” said Brent Kallay, director of information technology at Lakewood City School. “Students can draw paths and color codes to learn the basics of coding using pencil and paper.
The Howmet Aerospace Foundation invests in STEM and technical education as part of its commitment to educate and inspire future scientists, engineers and technical professionals. Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation Executive Director Terri M. Richards said the district, which last year received a $34,000 Howmet grant to purchase Sphero BOLT Power Pack Robots for high school students, was encouraged to apply for funds this year. “It`s really nice to be able to get a grant that raises to the next level the STEM education curriculum that we have here,” Richards said.
“His Ozobot Blockly, powered by Google’s Blockly, has five different levels, from Reader to Master, which students can experience using the devices provided. Coding and programming are in-demand professional skills that exist in every industry. Bringing experiences to the youngest learners is highly impactful”. The grant will also provide the district’s middle school with a robot kit for her STEM class. Ozobot is an intelligent robot that can follow lines, move freely, recognize colors, and be programmed with visual code. Students learn hands-on about robotics, mathematics, and programming.
Kallay Added, “Providing opportunities to learn coding and programming puts students in a position to be critical and creative thinkers, potentially develop a lifelong interest/skillset and become prepared for the technological and global opportunities available to them in the future”. Lakewood Rangers Education Foundation serves current students in the Lakewood City Schools by providing educational enrichment opportunities that enhance excellence in learning and elevate the quality of each and every student`s education at the elementary, middle, or high school levels.
