News Tech: The front wall is covered with a giant screen. A dozen rectangles and squares show footage of three refugee camps already connected to the system. There is also a photo of his basketball court in a refugee camp in Samos. Another screen shows the playground, and another shows the inside of one of his containers where people gather. A red light suddenly flashes overhead. A potential threat has been identified in one of the camps. This “threat” was reported by Centaur, a high-tech security system tested and deployed by the Greek Ministry of Immigration in all of the country’s approximately 40 refugee camps.

Officers carry smartphones with software that allows them to communicate with the command center. Upon determining the nature and severity of the threat, the onsite control room will direct the incident to be resolved. Video footage and other data collected during operation can be stored under “event cards” in the system. This particular incident is merely a simulation presented to Al-his Jazeera during an exclusive tour and preview of Centaurus-his system.

Centaur includes a camera and motion sensor. It uses algorithms to automatically predict and flag threats such as the presence of weapons, unauthorized vehicles, and unusual visits to restricted areas. The system then alerts responsible authorities such as the police, fire brigade and civilian security forces working in the camp. The operator deploys a camera-equipped drone from the control room and directs it to rush to the location of the threat reported to the officers stationed at the camp.

According to Greek officials, the aim of the program is to ensure the safety of those living in the camps and surrounding areas. “We will use technology to prevent violence and prevent events like Moria, the camp arson. Greece’s Immigration Minister Notis Mitarati said the newly created EU-funded project on the island of Kos in November ” “Closed and controlled,” he told Al Jazeera at the opening ceremony of the refugee camp. The Centaur star system is connected.
