News Tech: The FBI announced Thursday that data could not be recovered from the laptop used by the 20-year-old suspect who is accused of fatally shooting three people and shooting five others in a suburban Indianapolis mall. Herb Stapleton, the special agent in charge of the FBI’s Indianapolis office, revealed during a press conference that agents were unable to retrieve any information from the laptop discovered in the shooter’s oven. Before leaving for the shooting, the shooter, Jonathan Douglas Sapirman, 20, of Greenwood, police said, put his laptop in the oven at his apartment along with a can of butane. The oven was turned on and preheated to a high setting.

The heat from the oven damaged the laptop beyond forensic analysis, Stapleton said. The FBI is still trying to analyze the cellphone that police say Sapirman dropped in a toilet in a mall restroom before opening fire in the food court on July 17, Stapleton said. The FBI and Greenwood police, in trying to determine a motive for Sapirman’s actions, also are working analyzing his social media and online presence to potentially uncover a motive for the shooting, Stapleton said.
