Wales and British and Irish Lions center Jamie Roberts retires aged 35

During his illustrious career, Roberts won 94 Wales caps, three Tests for the British and Irish Lions, and finished with the Waratahs in Australia.

“As I near the end of my professional playing career, I’m leaving with a deep appreciation for everything the sport has given me.”

“The timing feels appropriate,” Roberts remarked.

On social media, Roberts declared his plan to retire.

“Our wonderful sport has impacted my life far beyond the white lines of the playing field.

“After giving everything I had in body and mind, the game of rugby has given me more than I could have ever imagined in return,” Roberts said.

“I guess its values have defined my attitude and approach to life and certainly shaped who I am today.

“It’s difficult to know where to start when it comes to thanking those who’ve influenced and helped my career.

“There are too many to mention, but in time, I hope I get the opportunity to share a glass and thank you all individually.” Roberts is currently in South Africa working as a television pundit on the series between Springboks and Wales.

He actually trained with Wales on the day he announced his retirement to help make up the numbers ahead of the final deciding Test in Cape Town on Saturday. “It was interesting how it came about,” said Roberts.

“I was in my hotel room drafting my retirement statement and getting quite emotional about it. “I checked my phone and I had a voice message from Wayne Pivac asking if I would come and make up numbers in training.

“But also the coaches with a lot them in the Wales side when I started my first steps in Test rugby.” Roberts made his international debut in 2008 and was converted from a full-back/wing into a centre later that year.

“It was an amazing last day spending it with lads who I had played with a lot in my career and to share that with them. “It was amazing synergy I could train with the lads and help them prepare for an important Test, knowing full well I would be pulling the proverbial rip cord on my career in the evening.
