Some local school districts are allowing student athletes to eschew masks during games after the PIAA said spring sport athletes can only be maskless when they can maintain social distancing.
Spring sports were canceled last year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, and since then the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association has followed the state Department of Health’s guidelines for athletes, coaches and officials to wear face coverings.
Following the board’s Zoom meeting earlier this month, the PIAA updated guidelines for spring sports that masks do not have to be worn by athletes or coaches where they can maintain six-feet apart outdoors.
If they cannot socially distance from others, masks are still required for workouts, competition, and on the sidelines and in the dugout.
