Jason Garrett takes over Drew Breese on NBC

The network announced Tuesday that former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett will replace Drew Brees as an analyst on “Football Night in America.”

Garrett has been working for as an analyst on USFL games since April, though he apparently has not closed the door on a return to coaching.

After one season as a Sunday night analyst and colour commentator for Notre Dame games, Brees left NBC. His departure was first reported last month and confirmed this week by Pete Bevacqua, who stated that Brees wants to spend more time with his family in retirement.

The 56-year-old coach spent 10 seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys, accruing an 85-67 record and three playoff appearances, but never advancing past the divisional round. After his firing at the end of the 2019-20 season, Garrett worked as offensive coordinator for the New York Giants under new head coach Joe Judge, but was fired before the end of the season.

Garrett’s promotion is the latest move in the most eventful broadcasting offseason in recent memory. NBC lost longtime broadcaster Al Michaels to Amazon Prime’s new “Thursday Night Football” broadcasts, replacing him with Mike Tirico.
