Most authors show affection for the old place, but not Charles Stross. His “Quantum of Nightmares” is the second in his “New Management” series, set in an alternate London under the control of a prime minister who is also a horror-god out of Lovecraft. (Where did that idea come from?) Once again there are gibbet cages and skull racks on display at Tyburn, but the medieval barbarity is compounded by entirely modern displays of wealth and power, their effects felt all the way up and down the social scale.
