In Science and Space: A technical error has occurred in one of the James Webb Space Telescope’s instruments. The next generation of telescopes has been working like crazy, sending back amazing scientific observations of exoplanets, galaxies and even planets near us. Anomalies are speed bumps in Webb’s work that turn off certain observation modes.
The mechanism in question is used by Webb to select different wavelengths when making observations in his MRS mode. NASA stressed that there are no problems with the telescope and that MIRI’s other three modes of observation are functioning normally.
The Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) is equipped with cameras and spectroscopes that view the universe at specific infrared wavelengths that humans cannot see. MIRI is adept at peering into star-forming regions of galaxies. MIRI uses four observation modes. “On August 24, he showed that the mechanism supporting one of these modes, known as medium-resolution spectroscopy (MRS), appeared to have increased friction during the scientific observation setup,” he told NASA.
Webb has already survived an earlier incident when a micrometeorite crashed into one of his mirrors. The much older Hubble Space Telescope has endured a mishmash of technical problems during its long life in space. Challenges are almost inevitable, so the good news is that most of Webb is working as intended.
