New and improved selfie cameras are expected to come with the Samsung Galaxy S23 series

After employing the same selfie camera sensor for the last four generations of the phones, Samsung is planning to outfit the Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ with new technology that promises enhanced performance. Early in 2023, the Samsung Galaxy S23 series is anticipated to debut as the company’s next-generation traditional flagship lineup. There hasn’t been much information confirmed regarding the phones, but a recent report suggests that the S23 and S23+ may see an intriguing improvement.

According to these reports, the 10 MP IMX374 will be replaced by a new 12 MP sensor. It’s unlikely this change affects the S23 Ultra, however, as that phone is expected to maintain a 40 MP selfie camera. The jump from the Galaxy S9 series’ 8 MP selfie shooter to the S10’s 10 MP camera brought a solid improvement in imaging performance, and expectant fans will be hoping the touted 12 MP sensor for the S23 toes a similar line. The IMX374 is a tiny 1/3.52-inch sensor, and its replacement could well be one from the 1/2.55-inch family. Apple is rumored to be set to offer improved selfie cameras on the iPhone 14 series as well, and the Galaxy S23 getting a similar evolution would be an apt response. We’ll keep you updated on this.

Supposedly, the Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+ could arrive next year with new selfie cameras. While selfie performance has seen a steady uptick across recent generations of the phones, those changes have likely come from improved lenses and software, as Samsung used the same selfie camera sensor across the Galaxy S10, S20, S21, and S22 non-Ultra models.
