Lemelson STEM Program | Masters of Science in Elementary Education | College of Education and Human Development

Story Highlights:

  • The goal of the Lemelson STEM program is to develop expert teachers in STEM education with an emphasis in teaching math and science and integrating engineering and technology concepts. The first year we focused on shifting teaching practice towards Standard based approaches. This involves teaching through an inquiry approach in science as outlined by the Next Generation Science Standards and using the Standards for Mathematical Practice in the Common Core Mathematics Standards to support the learning of ALL students. This process involves re-conceptualizing and refining how they design the physical space, develop classroom routines, plan lessons, and facilitate discussions. The second year will focus on refining instruction skills and developing leadership skills to support other teachers. Our work aligns with the Nevada Governor’s and legislature’s vision in increasing participation and interest in STEM education.
