On Oct. 24, the messaging platform will stop supporting previous versions of Apple’s mobile operating systems, and thus older iPhone models.

However, as of October, the platform will no longer be functional with iPhone 5 and 5C, as iOS 12 is not yet available for these older handsets.

An iPhone running “iOS 12 and newer” is recommended. Those with an iPhone 5S, 6, or 6S can continue to text using WhatsApp; all they need to do is make sure their smartphone is running an updated version of iOS.

Before support ends for different versions of old operating systems, WhatsApp notifies users directly in the app and sends multiple reminders to upgrade.

It seems unlikely many people will still be relying on an iPhone 5 for their WhatsApp access, but there will always be a few holdouts who really will need to spend some cash and upgrade their smartphone over the next five months.
