Get credentials for one subject in math or science

The internship program is designed for people seeking to earn a single-subject credential in math or science, which is especially important because schools often have a difficult time filling those positions. Participants in the two-year program work full-time as teachers in local school districts while taking classes at night to earn their credential. It is accredited by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Story Highlights:

  • Three meetings are scheduled via Zoom to learn more about the program and ask questions. They will be Jan. 13, Feb. 8, and March 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. Register now.

  • Support includes goal setting, employment resources, classroom observation, and site mentorship.

“If you have been thinking about becoming a teacher and have a math or science background, the single subject intern program could be the way to teach and earn your credential at the same time,” said Keri Morgan, a coordinator with SDCOE’s Teacher Effectiveness and Preparation department.

The coursework is completely online with a combination of both synchronous and asynchronous learning. The courses in the intern program are eight weeks long and designed based on the principles of experiential learning.

The single subject internship program was built on the success of a similar special education intern program, using the same model.

“This program has had a positive impact on my learning by equipping me with the tools that I needed during my first year of teaching,” a participant in the special education program said. “Having to apply these lessons quickly to my teaching was effective in cementing in the information that I learned.”

SDCOE’s Teacher Effectiveness and Preparation department provides programs that address pre-service preparation, advanced teacher credentials and authorizations, and professional learning for educators that are responsive to district, teacher, student, and community needs.
