The Dodgers begin the 2022 portion of their schedule at Marshalltown on Thursday night.
MARSHALLTOWN — During the holiday break, the seventh-ranked Fort Dodge wrestling team went to work, trying to fine-tune as much as they could heading into the second half of their schedule.
Junior varsity action begins at 6:30 p.m., with the varsity to follow.
“We were able to work on some things and technique,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “It will be nice to compete again and getting a routine going.”
In the first IAwrestle rankings of 2022, Ayala (16-2), Bishop (13-4) and freshman Koy Davidson (13-6) are all ranked second at their respective weights.
Before the pause, the Dodgers hosted the Don Miller Invitational, placing fourth as a squad. Dru Ayala (106), Max Bishop (113) and Damarion Ross (138) earned championships.
Ross is eighth and Ben Egli (182) is sixth for Fort Dodge. Sophomore Cal Hartman (160) reached double-digit wins in the first portion of the schedule, going 13-5.
Marshalltown’s lone rated wrestler is senior Gannon Williams, who is ninth at 220 pounds.
The new difficulty now for the Dodgers and dozens of other programs across the state is trying to get healthy. “We’ve had some kids that have been sick over break,” Thompson said. “A lot of stuff is going around.”
The Dodgers’ second half will include seven duals and four invitationals before the postseason begins in February. “The postseason is going to come quickly,” Thompson said. “We have 13 practices in January and seven in February, and the weather hasn’t been a factor yet. So we have to keep focused on what we need to do.”
