News Tech: Weeks after the Taliban announced a ban on poppy cultivation, US media reports said Afghanistan’s fastest-growing drug industry operates from a visible desert outpost. This is because Afghanistan is the world’s center of opium production and is estimated to supply her 80% of the world’s opium users. The meth industry is growing at a record pace, according to The Washington Post, and increasing global demand has raised fears that the country could become a major supplier. US newspaper said that over the past six years, hundreds of stimulant drug laboratories have popped up in the country.

According to The Washington Post, the Taliban inspected the market but would not close it. This is despite the Taliban’s ban on the cultivation, manufacture and distribution of illegal drugs. Abdulwadood, who openly works in the methamphetamine business, said the only reason they are in the business is because there are no other jobs. “Of course, as the economy gets worse, more people will start making hookahs.”

They are being built monthly as the country’s economic crisis has forced Afghans to find new sources of income, the report added, adding that most of the meth produced is for export. David Mansfield, an expert on Afghanistan’s illicit economy who has written reports for investigators at the World Bank and the European Commission, said, “These laboratories have seen very large numbers of ephedra in the last few months. As a result, I was very busy,” he said ground, aerial photographs, and other sources.

“Most of the Taliban’s income comes from taxing illegal goods and drugs are one,” said the EU’s European Center for Drug and Drug Addiction Surveillance on drug markets, crime and supply cuts. Director Andrew Cunningham said. “Without money flowing into the treasury, it is impossible to provide even the most basic services,” said Cunningham.
