News Tech: By cutting the number of suicide attempts among Aetna members by 20% by 2025, CVS Health has made significant progress toward the objective set last year.

Aetna, a CVS Health business, started supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) Project 2025 project in 2017, which aims to cut the suicide rate by 20% by the year 2025. By 2025, CVS Health wants to reduce suicide attempts among Aetna members by 20%. This objective was inspired by the campaign.

For those aged 10 to 34, suicide is the second greatest cause of mortality. It’s not necessary to be. 90% of those who commit suicide have an underlying mental health disorder that may be curable.

Overall trend: Through March 2022, CVS Health has observed a 15.7% decrease in suicide attempts among Aetna members compared to 2019 baselines.

“The CDC announced nationwide suicide crisis affects all of our members. Although we are making progress in reducing adult suicide attempts, we won’t have achieved our goal until we can say the same for teenagers “Sree Chaguturu, MD, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer of CVS Health, remarked. “We are stepping up efforts to prevent teen suicide by identifying those most at-risk and in need of intervention, reaching out to those released from the ER after a suicide attempt, and supporting parents and loved ones in making the mental health of their children a priority,” reads a statement from the organisation.

Reducing suicide among Aetna members In order to accomplish this, CVS Health is concentrating on increasing services for and outreach to teenagers, including:

In order to give healthcare professionals the knowledge and tools they need to recognise and assist teenagers and young adults at risk of suicide, Aetna continues to work closely with them. According to Cara McNulty, President, Behavioral Health and Mental Well-being, CVS Health, “We are adopting evidence-based therapy and outreach programmes to prevent suicidal ideation before it starts and offer adolescents the clinical care they need when they are at risk.” In order to lower the number of suicide deaths in the United States, it is crucial to stop suicide attempts, save lives, and seek out mental health resources.

“Our members are not immune to the national suicide crisis reported by the CDC. Though we are on track lowering suicide attempts in adults, our goal will not be reached until we can say the same for adolescents,” Dr. Chaguturu said.
