Electric fire forces dozens of domestic, commercial evacuations in Pasadena – Pasadena Star News

There was no damage to buildings and no injuries were reported, Derderian said.

Story Highlights:

  • South Lake Avenue, a main city street, was closed to traffic from California Boulevard to San Pasqual Streets as fire authorities waited for utility workers to shut off power in the area, said Lisa Derderian, Pasadena city spokeswoman. Smoke could be seen rising from the vault in front of several clothing stores and restaurants.

  • The blaze was reported to authorities at 6:15 p.m. as the fire ignited underground in front of 528 South Lake Avenue, officials said. A total of 24 addresses were evacuated, including businesses and homes. The block houses several large department stores like Macy’s and TJ Maxx.

The road closures caused heavy traffic congestion in the oft used road. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The two dozen addresses were expected to be without power for the next several hours as firefighters worked to fully extinguish the flames, Derderian said.
