A Hartford man broke into Meriden’s shop and stole cash and cigarettes

On Sept. 9 police responded to the Citgo at 80 Cook Ave. for a report of an activated alarm. The owner told police he saw two people inside of the store. Officers responding saw a man walking away and began a foot chase. Police apprehended Arroyo and found him with about $682 in cash along with a folding knife, according to a police report.

Story Highlights:

  • Pedro Arroyo, 37, of 150 Charter Oak, Hartford, was charged Sept. 9 with first-degree burglary, second-degree criminal mischief, third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit those charges, and interfering with police.

  • Officers noticed the front door glass was shattered and the store appeared ransacked, the report said. Officers found two large bags behind a dumpster filled with items that appeared to have been taken from the store.

Store security video showed two men break into the store using a hammer and then fill bags with items. Both were seen taking items in the area of the cash register. The owner told police that is where he keeps about $650 in cash, which police noted was consistent with the $682 found in Arroyo’s possession, the report said. The second man in the video has not been identified.
